Rainy Day Activities on the Florida Gulf Coast

Here's something every experienced Florida traveler knows: afternoon thunderstorms are part of the Gulf Coast experience from June through September. They roll in fast, dump rain for 30–60 minutes, and then clear out just as quickly. The sky turns brilliant, the air cools down, and the beach is often better after a storm than before.

But sometimes the rain sticks around longer. And sometimes you just want a day that isn't about the beach. Here's our guide to the best rainy day activities near our Madeira Beach and Holmes Beach vacation rentals.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Distance: 20 minutes from Madeira Beach

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is one of the best aquariums in Florida, and it's a working marine rescue facility — not just a display. The resident animals are all rescued sea turtles, dolphins, and other marine life that can't be returned to the wild.

Winter the dolphin (of the movie Dolphin Tale) lived here until her passing in 2021. Her legacy continues through the aquarium's ongoing rescue and rehabilitation work.

Plan for: 2–3 hours. The aquarium is genuinely interesting for adults as well as kids.

Tip: Buy tickets online in advance. The aquarium gets crowded on rainy days when everyone has the same idea.

The Dali Museum — St. Petersburg

Distance: 30 minutes from Madeira Beach

The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg has the largest collection of Dali's work outside of Europe. The building itself is architecturally stunning — a geodesic glass bubble attached to a concrete structure, designed to withstand hurricane-force winds.

Even if you're not an art person, the Dali Museum is worth a visit. The surrealist paintings are genuinely mind-bending, the building is beautiful, and the café is excellent.

Plan for: 2–3 hours. The audio guide is worth getting.

Tip: The museum is closed on Tuesdays. Check the website for current hours.

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts — Tampa

Distance: 45 minutes from Madeira Beach

FMoPA is a small but excellent photography museum in downtown Tampa. The rotating exhibitions are consistently interesting, and the permanent collection includes significant works in documentary and fine art photography.

If you're combining this with other Tampa activities, it pairs well with the Tampa Museum of Art, which is a short walk away.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium — Sarasota

Distance: 45 minutes from Holmes Beach

Mote Marine is a world-class marine research institution with a public aquarium. The exhibits focus on Gulf Coast marine life — sharks, rays, sea turtles, and manatees. The shark tank is particularly impressive.

What makes Mote different from a typical aquarium is the research context. You can see active science happening alongside the exhibits, which makes it more interesting for curious adults.

Plan for: 2–3 hours.

John's Pass Village — Madeira Beach

Distance: On-site for Madeira Beach guests

John's Pass Village is a covered boardwalk with shops, restaurants, and galleries. It's a perfectly good rainy day destination — you can browse the shops, grab lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, and watch the boats come and go from the marina.

The rain actually makes John's Pass more pleasant in some ways — fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and a moody atmosphere over the water.

Shopping

Ellenton Premium Outlets

Distance: 45 minutes from Madeira Beach

If you want serious shopping, the Ellenton Premium Outlets have 130+ stores including major brands at outlet prices. It's a full-day shopping destination and one of the better outlet centers in Florida.

St. Armands Circle — Sarasota

Distance: 50 minutes from Holmes Beach

St. Armands Circle is an upscale shopping and dining district on a small island between Sarasota and Lido Beach. The shops are a mix of boutiques, galleries, and national brands. The restaurants are excellent. Even in the rain, it's a pleasant place to spend a few hours.

Downtown St. Petersburg

Distance: 30 minutes from Madeira Beach

Downtown St. Pete has become one of the best urban neighborhoods in Florida. The Central Avenue corridor has independent boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants. The Saturday Morning Market (October–May) is worth planning around if you're here on a weekend.

Bowling and Entertainment

Splitsville Luxury Lanes — Tampa

Distance: 45 minutes from Madeira Beach

Splitsville is a high-end bowling alley with full restaurant service, billiards, and a bar. It's a good option for groups or families who want something active on a rainy afternoon.

Dave & Buster's — Tampa

Distance: 45 minutes from Madeira Beach

Classic arcade and restaurant combination. Good for families with older kids or groups who want a casual, competitive afternoon.

Cooking at the Rental

Sometimes the best rainy day activity is staying in. All of our vacation rentals have full kitchens, and a rainy afternoon is a great excuse to cook something special.

The Publix on Manatee Avenue (Holmes Beach) and the Publix on Gulf Boulevard (Madeira Beach) both have excellent seafood counters. Pick up some fresh grouper or shrimp, grab a bottle of wine, and spend the afternoon cooking and relaxing.

A few easy Gulf Coast recipes to try:

  • Blackened grouper with mango salsa
  • Gulf shrimp pasta with garlic, white wine, and cherry tomatoes
  • Fish tacos with fresh slaw and lime crema

The Silver Lining

Here's the thing about Florida rain: it almost always clears by late afternoon. The storms that roll in at 2 PM are usually gone by 4 PM, leaving the beach cooler, less crowded, and often more beautiful than it was in the morning.

So even on a "rainy day," you'll likely get a few hours of perfect beach weather. Plan your indoor activities for midday and keep the late afternoon open.
